Microsoft will release an updated version of the Windows Mobile platform with several new features including a web browser, it was revealed yesterday.
Windows Mobile 6.1, which will be available "within a few months", will include time-saving features, easier phone navigation, management software and increased security safeguards, the CTIA Wireless conference in Las Vegas heard.
Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's entertainment and devices, told ITpro it will be "a critical release... whether you are looking for a consumer or business experience".
The new version includes built-in email settings for 2,600 internet service providers and a customisable home screen to make managing email and calls easier.
Business users will be able to keep track of conversations through threaded text messaging and the updated interface will make it easier to move between applications and services on Windows Mobile phones, claims Mr Bach.
Microsoft is also releasing a new version of Internet Explorer Mobile which will give customers 'desktop-grade' web browsing on Windows Mobile phones.
