The advantage of employing home workers is that employers can use the talents of people who might otherwise be unavailable, the National Group on Home working has said.
Spokesperson Nesta Holden said this practice, which companies can adopt by utilising IP telephony and other devices to connect with offices from other locations, means those who need to build "flexibility" into their daily lives can be employed.
Citing the usefulness of wireless and other devices for remote working, be it at home or any other location outside the offices, she said: "The reasons many people do homeworking are things like childcare and other things so allowing people to work from home is giving employers access to a different pool of people."
Ms Holden added that it was "commonly accepted" that productivity was higher among homeworkers.
According to homebusiness.org.uk, most employers have not yet fully tapped the potential of homeworking, with managers and professionals making up most of the people currently being allowed to work from home.
