Revenue from the voice over internet protocol (VoIP) industry is set to boom, with the number of subscribers set to double in the next four years, research has predicted.
A report from In-Stat estimates the consumer telecommunication market, including managed VoIP, will reach $2 trillion (£1 trillion) by 2012.
It has predicted the market will grow at a rate of 5.7 per cent on average over the next five years.
Keith Nissen, an analyst who wrote the report, said: "Over the next five years, 150 million PSTN lines will be eliminated, yet total voice revenue worldwide will remain steady."
He added the "digital divide will continue to grow" and by 2012 broadband penetration will stand at about 85 per cent in developed countries, with developing countries "languishing" at less than ten per cent.
In January 2006 In-Stat predicted the number of VoIP users would exceed 55 million by 2009.
