The movement of next generation broadband will be worth the high costs needed to roll it out, reports an industry group.
According to the Broadband Stakeholder Group (BSG), the £16 billion it will cost to introduce a new high-speed broadband service is worth it, to provide better productivity and better use of applications.
Managed bandwidth services could benefit, according to the government advisory group, as next generation connections will have a strong advantage over current broadband.
Anthony Walker, chief executive of the BSG, said: "If widespread network deployment didn't happen in the medium term, perhaps three to five years, then this report suggests that the UK could be losing out."
He said there are a lot of issues surrounding the demand and supply side to stop adverse effects in the short-term.
It was found recently that download speeds in London are twice that of other areas in the UK, like Northern Ireland and Wales.
