Companies taking advantage of managed website hosting and establishing an online presence should find it relatively easy to protect their intellectual property on the internet, it has been claimed.
Lawrence Smith-Higgins, head of business, outreach and education at the Intellectual Property Office, said the organisation often comes in contact with firms that make surprising mistakes in the area.
"If you're launching a company where the name is very, very important and you're going to build a brand then you ought to take some basic steps to protect that trade mark from the word go, rather than establish it in the market place," he added.
Mr Smith-Higgins went on to say securing intellectual property will not cost companies anything initially, just the time it takes to find the correct information.
Almost 40 per cent of companies have found a domain they want being held by another individual, according to a Confederation of British Industry report entitled 'UK competitiveness: the role of IT services'.
