Modern IT processes, such as managed IT services, are increasingly important to today's companies, experts claim.
A new report from research firm Gartner suggests businesses cannot rely on sheer hard work to overhaul their IT procedures and recommends the use of a project management office (PMO) to help them modernise their operations.
Using a PMO, an enterprise can monitor its network, telephony, server hardware, storage systems and managed IT services to assist its chief information officer's strategic decisions.
Dale Vecchio, research vice president at Gartner, comments: "Effective IT modernisation requires organisation, and we believe that the concept of a project management office or multiple project management offices is crucial to organise for, and facilitate IT modernisation."
The report also suggests basing the PMO outside of the IT department to promote independence and reduce any bias.
Earlier this week, research from Infonetics claimed managed security products will be worth $13.8 billion (£6.9 billion) by 2011, with smaller firms predicted to increase their spending on the service.
