Many companies do not have the budget to deal with the increasing bandwidth requirements, according to new research.
Companies' bandwidth requirements will more than double over the next five years, but firms have only allowed a five per cent increase in their budget, according to a survey from Omniboss, reports ITPro.
The growth of email and web traffic was cited as the main reason behind the expected increase in bandwidth, with one-third of those surveyed attributing it to the increased use of voice over internet protocol (VoIP).
Of the 100 IT decision makers who responded, one-fifth said they expected the bandwidth requirements to increase by 150 per cent or more.
Despite 91 per cent of people predicting their bandwidth needs will grow over the next five years only three-quarters had made it a top priority.
Michael Davis, product director for European business communication provider Viatel, the survey's sponsor, told the website: "IT managers need to make sure that they don't neglect their bandwidth or networks could grind to a halt".
It was recently reported that the demand for video content over the internet could bring it to a standstill in less than two years.
