Firms could cut their energy usage if they allowed more managed remote workers in their company.
According to research from Sun Microsystems, those working from home use 64 watts of power per hour, compared to an office-based employee who uses 130 watts per hour, reports the Direct Response website.
In addition, the energy used in the commute to work has a huge impact on the difference between home and office-based workers.
By commuting 2.5 days a week a worker can save 5,400 kilowatts per hour on their weekly energy consumption.
Kristi McGee, senior director for the organisation's open work services group, told the website the power difference is "significant".
According to Information Week, many IT workers would opt to have a reduced salary in return for the ability to telecommute.
Research from Dice Holding revealed 40 per cent would have a reduced salary if they could become managed remote workers.
