SSL VPN's do not require companies to install VPN client software on remote devices. Users can make a secure connection from any laptop or desktop PC with a browser. Also called: SSL (Secured Socket Layer) Virtual Private Networks or SSL VPN. A security VPN SSL tunnel consists of one client successfully establishing an SSL session with a unique session ID with the device under test (DUT).
The original objective of SSL VPN software was to allow mobile users to access the growing number of web-based applications, including email (Microsoft Outlook Web Access), calendaring, meeting, or web database applications (Oracle, etc). Though in reality many organisations still have traditional client-server applications and need more than a Web-based VPN. This is where the original intention of SSL VPN solution fails.
A full internet security SSL VPN client is similar to a standard IPSec VPN client, although all data is sent over SSL. The major differences between an SSL VPN client and a traditional IPSec VPN client is that the SSL VPN client can be launched through the portal, so VPN client software does not need to deployed, installed and configured on remote PCs. In addition, remote users are not confined to accessing their corporate network from their dedicated home PC, they can login from any network location.
